Orchestration & Jazz Arranging Tutorials

Postby Derrek » Fri Dec 27, 2013 11:26 am

Is it likely that the very helpful "Orchestration" and the "Jazz Arranging" tutorials form Northern Music will be ported to this forum, or will they remain available at Northern Music?

Good Morning Derrek-

We are working on porting the Orchestration course over to our site- this should be withing the next couple months. However, due to copyright considerations, we will not be bringing over the Jazz arranging course.

cheers

Thank you both for the reply and for the efforts to port what you can.

Meanwhile both of those great online classrooms are there, running great at Northern Sounds - as is all of the original Garritan Forum.

It's cool that MM finally has this fledgling new Forum up, and I'm sure it will eventually be a busier place. But the administrators at NS have made it clear they're not closing up shop. The 10 years of archives are all there for the exploring, including those orchestration courses.

The majority of active participants in the Garritan community still go to that Forum, and so far it's been difficult to get them to spread out their online time even more so they can get involved here. Hopefully more will start taking a look at what's going on here at MM.

But, it looks like NS will be going for many more years to come, so avail yourself of those courses over there, Derrek!

Derrek:
I have made a living as a Jazz arranger for many years, and I will recommend the first volume of Jazz arranging by ....Garcia. It is a good book to start with.
The second book might be the one by Gary Lindsay at University of Miami.
Also, do a lot of listening while trying to imagine what the score might look like.
Practice writing out some of the themes that you are hearing.
If you are using JABB try writing for some small ensembles first (3 horns) or something like that.
Good luck, and perhaps I might be of some small help if you have a question or 2.
