shifting meter from 6/8 to 5/8

Postby kingfreeze » Thu Mar 06, 2014 2:38 pm

Hi Fellows, using the time signature tool, I am trying to insert a measure of 5/8 in a document that is in 6/8. When selecting the time signature tool, the options offered are 2/2,2/4,3/4,4/4,3/8,6/8,9/8, and 12/8. I am having problems changing the meter to 5/8. I know this must be simple, but cannot find the option...thoughts ?

Here's what I Googled up on that question:

"...when changing the time signature with the time signature tool, if changing from 4/4 time you can move the lower value by clicking the right OR the left arrows and still get to the "8th note gets a beat". If you click to the right, you get to 3/8, 6/8, 9/8. 12/8, etc, where the standard note grouping is dotted quarter notes. If you click to the left, you will get to 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, etc., where the note grouping is single 8th notes..."

The source is:

Finale Forum

That conversation thread is several years old, when Finale 2011 was current - but hopefully those right click/left click choices in the time signature tool haven't changed.

Hello,

You shouldn't have any trouble if while using the time signature tool, you double-click the measure you want to change.

From the Time Signature dialog box, adjust the number of beats, the beat duration, and then specify the measure range (in your case from x to x) that you want to change.

Thank you, guys. I think I was missing the "double click", which offered more options. dynamite, have a good evening.

Hi, Isaac - For my own education, since I don't use Finale, and am always trying to understand what tools users have available - does this mean the info I posted about needing to right or left click no longer applies to the current version of Finale?

Hey Randy,

The information still applies. Clicking left or right arrows to change the number of beats or the beat duration is a procedure that happens within the Time Signature dialog box, which you can access by double-clicking a measure with the Time Signature tool.

In Finale, I usually use the Composite option in the Time Signature Tool to enter 5/8 as 3+2 over 8 (or vice-versa) in order to group the notes within the measure--if only for notation purposes.
