Clarinet choir assignments in Aria

Postby gogreen » Sat Dec 27, 2014 10:45 am

Using Finale, GPO4 and the Aria player, I'm working on a piece for clarinet choir. The instrumentation is three Bb clarinets, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and contralto or contrabass clarinet. My concern is the Bb clarinet parts. I currently have 1st clarinet assigned to plr 1 and plr 3, 2nd clarinet assigned to plr 2 and plr 1, and 3rd clarinet assigned to plr 3 and plr 2. I tried using COMB2's clarinet sections, but the playback was way too harsh and "blippy"--very distasteful and un-clarinet-like. The solo clarinet assigned to channel 6 appears later in the score.

Is this the best way to build this ensemble with GPO4? How else could I create it?

Hi Arthur.
Before I'll try to help you, may I ask why there are more clarinets into your ARIA instance than in the score?

Hi Fabio. I should have cleared channels 6-11. Sorry.

Dear Arthur,
only five clarinets is much better :) .
The following are the most recent custom settings for GPO solo clarinet sound I ended with.
It sounds reacher and there is some extra body in it.
Though, I discovered that "Players" patches sound better to me than "Solo" one. I know they are derivatives, not full sampled instruments, but it seems that their strenght lies in what they lack… — please, don't pay my taste too much trust…
Hope it helps a little.

Thanks, Fabio. I've saved a picture of your settings and will try them!

Don't forget to slightly detune instances to each other (up to +/-3 cents).

PS. Congratulations for your "Danzetta". I really enjoyed it. It is the video from the live performance available now?

By detuning, you mean alter the pitch ever so slightly? Can that be done in the Aria player?

Thanks for your comments on Danzetta. The performance video won't be ready until next month.

Yes! You can do it by dragging the mouse up and down over the value next to the "Tune" label.

Also, use some panning to spread your performers across the stage: having sounds not coming from the some source helps to better part them one from the another (and mysteriously sound reacher).

A question: it is your original screenshot from notation or DAW software?

So THAT'S what "tune" in those places means! Sheesh! I didn't even know that! Thanks! I will experiment with this.

I see the range is 0-100, plus or minus.

My original screenshot is from the Aria player--not a DAW.
