No, not a huge surge, but a noticeable difference.
And usually they're not playing in unison but in harmony with each other, or separate lines entirely. I've not tried just doubling a section, but adding a backed off soloist doubling, as Randy has indicated, can add some realism to the mix.

The reason for the question is that I have a new project, 'Connais tu le pays' from the opera Mignon by Ambroise Thomas. There seems to be quite a bit of cello divisi there.
Time to experiment a little more.
