Thank you, Randy. I'll follow your advice and work some more with my files.

And happy new year!

As you can see from the attachments, when I open (not import) a midi file from Finale in Sonar, the track order doesn't match the score order. I know I can rearrange the tracks to whatever order I want in Sonar, so I'm guessing this isn't a big deal--right? I'm just wondering why the staff order doesn't match.

Thanks.

Hi, Art - That's right, the order will be fairly random. Notation programs do a lot of juggling of things that the user isn't aware of. You set up a score, and the program is constantly adjusting to the needs of the score, juggling the instruments needed, the MIDI channels involved, and the instances of ARIA needed. It's all more than a user can really comprehend, but the results are that when you look at the loaded ARIAs, the instruments aren't in any score order.

So when you export the MIDI, it exports that random, jumbled order. But it doesn't matter at all. The order has nothing to do with the sound in Sonar, and as you said, you're free to drag MIDI tracks up or down in any order you want. Just hover over a track until you see the vertical up/down arrows, then you can drag a track to a new position.

What you're seeing is totally normal, and of no consequence, but it's the complex manouvers made back in Finale as it kept up with the instruments you needed that resulted in this unexpected track order you see.

Has anyone who has Finale (2014) on both a Windows and Mac machine ever try opening the Windows file on the Mac and creating the MIDI file there to import into Sonar? It sounds as if it would work and would be less work than trying to identify all the tracks (especially of a many-instrument arrangement) in Sonar.

Hello Derek,

That's an interesting thought. I don't have access to a Mac at all to try. I can imagine this would work though.

I just thought I would post what a MIDI file exported from Finale 2012 and 2014 looks like when opened in Sonar.

Instead of all those lovely named instruments tracks Art has from Finale 2011, take a look at this:

Image

As mentioned in this thread, all the tracks are in a different order to the Finale Score. To identify the tracks I have to go into 'Sonar's' 'Staff View' to try to find which is which. This is not as straight forward as it seems. Apart from being 'mixed up', the tracks often assign different clefs and are in different octaves and so on.

What I do to save my sanity is to add an extra bar/measure right at the beginning and place an identifying note for each instrument .. 'note mapping' in effect. When I have finished identifying the tracks, I then delete that extra note-mapping bar/measure .. Oooooo .. I do envy you Art .. :?

I did send a ticket to MakeMusic two years ago. This bug is probably low-priority as I think a minority of Finale users work this way. :(

Fred ... :) .. Can you help bring this to anyone's attention? :?:

Yet another reason why I'm staying with 2011 for now. 8-)

I can understand that Art.

Though, for me, the new Layers accidentals and rests handling are so good. I had to have them.

That, and keep hoping for the track-names bug fix .. now .. where's Fred. ;)

I've placed the tracks in the order I prefer (score order), and I renamed some of them for easier identification. However, why do they have their original names in the right panes? Is this of any consequence?

Also, I've loaded two instances of the Aria player. I have successfully added instruments to the first instance, tracks 1-10. How do I add tracks 11-26 to the second Aria instance? I can bring up the second Aria instance, but how do I tell it its track 1 to really be track 11, and so forth? I've checked help files in Sonar, Garritan, and Finale to no avail on this.

Thanks.
