How does one add to a poster's reputation? I saw nothing on this in the FAQ.

Good question, Art. I don't see how to use that - I've never understood the whole "reputation" thing on any bulletin board, including at Northern Sounds.

Maybe Fred will see this question and clue us in. I see that he gave me a reputation point for something, and I appreciate it--But--how was it done?

Yes, I got one too.

It's a nice gesture. Thank you.

But how does one give a fellow Forum member a reputation point--?

Good question Randy. I'm not sure but I'm sure we shall soon find out. ;)

It would seem that if you "rate" the post by clicking on the thumbs up sign, it adds to the poster's reputation. You'll notice that you can't add to your own reputation, perhaps a sound scheme.

You can only rate a post once, although you could rate all the posters posts in a thread if you really LOVE them!

Now you both have 3 points (Randy and Michael) and one for gogreen for asking the question, courtesy of yours truly.

I can see this quickly getting out of hand!

Ah! I thought surely that couldn't be it because when I clicked the hand earlier and the comment box popped up, it made it look to me like you Had to write out some kind of report - and I'm not interested in doing that. Ok - now I see if you just ignore the text box and click Rate - you're done.

There ya go - Ya have a point, John, for being so helpful on this. Thanks!

Randy
P.S. I never understood this "Reputation" thing at Northern Sounds either. I have the impression that's true for a lot of people.

Thank you, John, for the rep.

One forum I sometimes visit, Sevenforums, has an elaborate reputation system with rules that keep things in check. Search that forum for "reputation and badges," and you'll see what I mean. Not sure if the software for this forum allows something similar.

Oh wow - That is elaborate indeed. I recognize the green dot meter as looking the same as the one at Northern Sounds, but that tier system of badges being granted by administrators wasn't done there. At NS there's different text descriptions that appear as the green dots grow - things like "on a worthy path" "is a beacon of light" - things like that.

Hmmm, well, I've just never paid much attention to all that sort of thing, but since this new Forum is in its infancy, maybe it would be helpful to have something like this in place.

Thanks for the info, Art - I think you deserve a thumbs up for that!

Hey Gents-

I think you've got it sorted! That is the way it works- click the "thumbs-up" icon and you can increase the poster's reputation essentially by "liking" their post or answer. We hope this can work to provide a platform for positive peer feedback and also link a users forum presence to the quality of input, and not necessarily the number of postings he or she has made. Also, just to clarify, to add a "thumbs-up" you don't need to write a comment, but it is sometimes nice to have the option. I will also make a note and see if we can get a quick FAQ up about the topic.

Cheers!
