musicXML chord positions

I'm wondering how and where in the XML I can find positioning data for chord symbols, specifically the x-axis/horizontal positioning of chords. When I look at the exported XML of a song from Sibelius or MuseScore, the harmony objects have a default-y value, but they don't have a default-x value. The notes in the measure, on the other hand, do each contain a default-x value. My goal is to be able to accurately assign a chord symbol to every note in the measure, without needing to do guesswork and approximations.

Generally, chord symbols indicated by the harmony element should precede the related note in the MusicXML timeline. Like direction elements, they can also have an offset element to indicate the offset from the current musical position in musical units. This should be better for associating chord symbols with notes semantically than trying to use default-x values.
