MakeMusic transfers MusicXML development to W3C

Postby Michael Good » Tue Jul 28, 2015 10:01 am

Today is a big day in open standards for music notation. MakeMusic, Steinberg, and Hal Leonard/Noteflight are co-founders of the new W3C Music Notation Community Group. MakeMusic has transferred development of MusicXML to this new group, and Steinberg has done the same with the SMuFL (Standard Music Font Layout) specification. I will be a co-chair of this new group together with my co-chairs Daniel Spreadbury of Steinberg and Joe Berkovitz of Hal Leonard/Noteflight.

You can read more about this move at the MusicXML blog. I've written more about the history of how we have gotten to this point on the Community Group blog.

We hope that you will join us in advancing MusicXML to version 4.0 and beyond at our new organizational home. Membership in the Community Group is free of charge and does not require membership in the W3C. You can join the group by clicking on the "Join This Group" button at:

https://www.w3.org/community/music-notation/

Members of the Community Group do need to set up a free W3C account, and agree to a Contributor License Agreement. If you work on music notation for an organization, please be sure to join on behalf of your organization. The agreement is available at:

https://www.w3.org/community/about/agreements/cla/

We will keep this forum around with all its discussion and history of the MusicXML format. I look forward to seeing you at our new development home at the W3C!

We now have 148 participants in the W3C Music Notation Community Group. Thanks to everyone who has joined the group so far!

We are busy working behind the scenes getting the group ready for business. To participate, start by clicking the "Join This Group" button on the home page: https://www.w3.org/community/music-notation/

If you work for a music notation company - including your own company - please be sure to use the left-hand column to sign up as an organizational participant. If you accidentally join as an individual, you may leave the group and rejoin as an organization representative.

Feel free to contact me or reply here if you have any questions about joining the W3C Community Group.
