Ties, slurs and voltas

Postby zimrahdev » Fri Jun 19, 2015 12:29 pm

Once common need is to be able to indicate that the last note or chord in a volta, is tied or slurred to the beginning of the repeat section. Equally, to be able to indicate that the first note or chord of a repeat section is tied or slurred from the previous section.

Is it possible to indicate this in MusicXML ?

I don't believe so. This has been a request for sometime (both for MusicXML and Finale). Another case that happens occasionally and is also not supported (by most XML interpreters) is the enharmonic tie (Eb tied to D#, for instance across a key change).

MusicXML 3.0 can indeed represent this. Be sure to set up the playback correctly with the tie element, using the time-only attribute if needed. If the repeat structure is nonstandard, explicitly setting the repeat playback using the sound element will also help.

However, some programs supporting MusicXML may have trouble reading or writing the MusicXML representation with complete accuracy. As Michael mentioned, this is one area where Finale could be improved.
