Transposition, atonal music and keyless instruments

Postby Richard Lanyon » Thu Mar 05, 2015 4:25 am

I'd just like to check whether there is a specific recommendation on how to deal with parts/instruments that should never display a key signature, either because the music isn't really in a key (e.g. atonal music) or because the instrument doesn't conventionally display a key signature (e.g. French Horn). Obviously it's possible to edit the number of fifths in the <key> definition, but this won't work in the case of a transposing instrument because either the concert score or the transposed score will still end up displaying a key signature. Is the "correct" solution simply to omit the <key>? Or would something like <mode>none</mode> be more appropriate for atonal music?

Hi Richard,

Yes, use a mode of none for atonal scores without key signatures. For cases like horn parts, use <key print-object="no">.
