"Overview" -all Garritan production with video

Postby rbowser » Sun Dec 08, 2013 6:28 pm

Someone needs to break the ice and post something here in the Media Room. So - here goes!

A particularly engrossing project for myself this year was writing a piece inspired by NASA footage used in "The Overview Effect" from Planetary Collective.

Something especially gratifying for me is that after posting this at You Tube, I was contacted by a representative from Planetary Collective. He's hoping that I can compose music for them on one of their future space video projects.

As it has been since 2006 when I first purchased GPO, it was a joy to use my collection of Garritan Libraries to realize this piece. The music was recorded and mixed in Sonar, and it's an all-Garritan production.

Randy B.

EDIT: It took multiple times for the YouTube button to work - Not sure what was wrong--But now the video's showing up. And of course what you want to do is click the bottom right hand corner gear to choose the highest rez your computer can handle, and go to full screen--AND turn up your volume!

Thank you, Kingfreeze - It's always so great when someone not only visits a thread, but also takes the time to write a post. I'm sure you know it gives people a boost to know that someone has actually listened and enjoyed. Appreciate your message - And look forward to hearing music from you!

"Kingfreeze"--that's an appropriate nickname in the middle of this incredibly cold weather we're all having!

Hello Randy,

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed it.

It is great that, as you say, it's all Garritan. Another example of what can be done with these libraries even though some people elsewhere are saying they are out of date and don't sound as good as ...... libraries.

Thanks again.

Thank you, Michael - I know the piece isn't new to you, so thank you for listening and commenting again. It's the thing I'm probably happiest with from 2013, so wanted to share it here, possibly for new people to hear for the first time--Time shall tell if new people start joining in!

Jack! I thought you heard this before - Glad you're hearing it now. And yes, much fun was involved in this project, as in engrossing fun. I would have to look at the project file to recall exactly what all I used, but I know GPO and JABB are in the leads, COMB filling out here and there, and yes, a touch of IO mostly in the percussion as I recall. I would say GPO was in the lead though.

Appreciate you commenting!

Jack, your post inspired me to open up that Sonar file and see for sure what I used. When you mentioned Instant Orchestra, I knew you were right I'd used a bit of it, but I also knew this wasn't primarily IO.

This list could be interesting/inspiring to people when they find the thread, since it does show what a huge palette of sounds we have when we use Garritan Libraries.-- And I didn't even use them all in this! No Steinway, or Stradavari, or Gofriller (I usually layer both of those soloists in with strings - surprised to see I didn't this time) and no World.

I used 5 instances of ARIA, some partly filled, others with all 16 slots filled. The order is jumbled, which often happens with me. I have templates and ensembles but rarely call them up. I let things grow as they want to, and keep adding instruments as I need them:

ONE

Piccolo solo KSG GPO
Piccolo group 1 COMB
Flute solo KS GPO
Flute Group 1 COMB
Clarinet solo GPO
Clarinet group 1 COMB
Full Strings KS GPO
French Horn 1 solo GPO
SAM Trombone Section KS GPO
Tuba JABB

TWO

Salvi Harp 1 HARPS
Basic Orch Percussion GPO
Glockenspiel KS GPO
Violin 2 solo KS GPO
Violins 1 KS GPO
Violin 1 solo KS GPO
Violins 2 KS GPO
Viola 1 solo ks GPO
Violas KS GPO
Cello 1 solo KS GPO
Cellos KS GPO
Double Bass 1 solo KS GPO
Basses KS GPO

THREE

Glass Armonica GPO
Slots 2-16 an ensemble pre-set from CLASSIC PIPE ORGANS (Mod2 Great Clarion 4'through Mod 2 Pedal Principal 16')

FOUR

Wagner Brass IO
Full Choir IO
Orch Gliss up rapid IO
Earth cavern percussion IO
Cymbals extras and FX IO
Basic Orch Percussion GPO
Huge Brass PLOGUE FREE SOUNDS*
Oboe 1 modern solo GPO
Bowed vibes rapid IO
Oboe 2 modern solo GPO
Clarinet group-solo 1 KS COMB
Bassoon 1 solo GPO
Bassoon 2 solo GPO

FIVE

French horn group 1 COMB
French horn overlay ff GPO
Trumpet 1 KS JABB
Trumpet group 1 KS COMB
Trumpets attack IO
Trombone solo GPO
Tuba group 1 COMB

*ah ha! So one non-Garritan instrument did sneak into the lot. Well, at least it's Plogue!

Really great assortment of the Garritan libraries and, yes, so motivating for all to see what goes into a stellar production.

Really creative writing and very convincing, Randy.

Congrats,

Jack

P.S. I didn't get a notification on this one. Had to come back and see if you replied to my post. Glad I did.
