Re: Studio monitors

Be sure to keep the speaker wires in phase when you plug everything in. My set uses guillotine clips and bare wire (tinned with solder) to connect the speakers. If you don't keep the wire between the two in phase, you will get a little humming.

Good point, KM. Thanks.

Re: Studio monitors

Thanks, KM , for this information. I just ordered the AV-40s. I decided on them because: * I want powered monitors. * Consistently good reviews everywhere I looked. * I looked not only at review ratings, but also at the ratio of those who gave the monitors a 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1. The ratio of those givi...

Re: Studio monitors

But I did notice they had one pair from M-Audio which goes for $150 for the pair. You can take a look at the listing - the write up is encouraging. Then contact them, ask for input if you want. That's the best I can do! M-Audio AV 40 Monitors EDIT: Note that these are powered speakers - meaning the...

Re: Pish Posh (a work just for the fun of it)

OK, Mitch, that was great fun! I heard circus music in there--jugglers and acrobats and contortionists and tigers, all on parade. This music also brought me back 30 years ago to the carousel on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Oh, did my daughter love that! Thanks for posting such a fun...

Studio monitors

Hearing our renderings accurately is the key to getting the adjustments right. So if I wanted to use studio monitors instead of "speakers," what do you recommend--for someone on a limited budget?

Re: Clarity in a rendering

Oh boy. Talk about a can of worms. At least for me, anyway. Thanks, Randy, for this explanation. I will absorb it, study it, and emulate it. Art, a very relevant, excellent and essential question. You are clearly developing your mixing skills and a sensitivity to what is needed in a mix. Yes, Michae...

Clarity in a rendering

In another thread, Randy commented on getting clarity in a rendering: The process of getting some clarity in the initially semi-muddy sound (an artifact of piling up layers of instruments) always involves pushing down low frequencies, playing with the instrument panning more, and reducing reverb unt...

Thanks, Randy. I have some questions how getting clarity, as you mentioned, so I took my questions to a new thread.

Re: Short jazz cue for a stage play

Nice, Randy. The clarity of your renderings always amazes me--I can actually HEAR everything in there! Yup--easy-going, laid back, and jazzy with swing. Let's hear more from this production, please!

Re: What I've really been working on lately.

I like this, Mitch. Nice chord patterns, interesting melodic lines. I think it might be a bit too long. I had trouble discerning the form, and I thought the changed portion on page 36 was a bit out of place. Maybe shorten the piece to tighten it up? Other than that, really nice! This is, of course, ...
