RE: triplets and their order

Hi Nick, In the examples you sent me, both tuplets (the good and the bad) were three 16th in the time of two 16ths. Without the <normal-type> element, Dolet thinks the tuplet that starts with an eighth note is 3 eighths in the time of 2 eighths. So the tuplet in Finale becomes longer than it should ...

RE: triplets and their order

Hi Nick, Currently this list is set up so there are no attachments. Please send e-mail me separately with the MusicXML files and the original notation, and I'll take a look at this. Tuplets will be improved in both MusicXML 0.7 and Dolet 1.1, but it sounds like what you want to do should work with t...

RE: SVG fonts

Hi Jane and Brian, I can't help with the SVG fonts, though I hope that goes well. Jane, I would be very interested in seeing what elements you needed to add to MusicXML for your abstractions. Brian, this is great news on the progress of the Unicode fonts. Please keep us posted on future developments...

RE: duration and divisions

Hello Christof, Guido, and Graham, I like this refinement of "intended duration" - thanks! The original intent for this was the "wrong notations" like swing and various Baroque notations, not for phrasings. So we could refine the duration definition to make this explicit: it reflects nominal duratio...

RE: duration and divisions

Hello Christof and Guido, I think the current situation reflects our lack of deep experience with sequencer-type programs and MusicXML to date. The two major alternatives seem to be: - Really make two parallel timelines, adding <type>, <dot>, and <time-modification> elements to both the <forward> an...

RE: The Midixml.dtd

Hi Brian, The MIDI Manufacturers Association has a DTD that provides XML definitions for all messages. I agree that having this available opens up lots of possibilities. That's why we pushed to make sure the MIDI messages were in a separate module from other XML definitions. Our choice now is whethe...

RE: The Midixml.dtd

Hi Brian, Taking another look at the Standard MIDI File specification, it seems that the MidiTimeCodeQuarterFrame, SongPositionPointer, SongSelect, and Tune Request events should not be in the Standard MIDI File DTD. These are MIDI system common messages, and the SMF spec says that only MIDI channel...

RE: The Midixml.dtd

Hi Brian, Thanks for the update and the specific suggestions for the MIDI DTD. The current DTD will probably not be revised since we will be moving over to the new MMA-based DTD soon. Yes, you've heard that before, but there's an MMA meeting coming up in a couple of weeks, so we need to get a first ...

RE: Modes, intonation, etc. in MusicXML

Hi Brian, Thanks for the great contribution regarding modes and intonation. The question of degradation during translation is a general one for many features, not just modes. I think MusicXML is doing about as well as it can here. Translators have to choose what is appropriate for their application ...
