Re: Clarifying the semantics of <voice>

Michael, Dominick, In the interests of directness, I would like to avoid a lengthy attempt to motivate the backup element, and go straight to a discussion of alternative approaches to representing voices. To help us move on, here is a very informal (and, I hope, sympathetic) motivation for <backup>,...

Re: octave-change elements

These are some interesting and certainly more sophisticated options that go beyond specifying transposition. Let me comment on these. For automatically changing concert-pitch-to-transposing scores, the tag that is most needed is an additional flag on the <accidental> or <note> element which specifie...

Re: octave-change elements

Hi Michael, I would propose that there be one additional, optional sibling to <octave-change> called <concert-octave-change>. This supplies an octave transposition to be applied only when the part is viewed in concert pitch. In general this need only be supplied for instruments like guitar or bass (...

Clarifying the semantics of <voice>

After thinking some more about the recent <chord> discussion, I'd like to touch on an additional area that has a strong need for clarification: the semantics of "voice". In the points I listed for clarification of <chord>, I included this statement of principle: "<voice> membership in...

octave-change elements

Hi Michael, In the <attributes> section of a <part> element, there is some confusion over the difference between adding 1 to <octave-change> and adding 12 to <chromatic>. Apparently they are considered the same, but I would not have expected that. My interpretation of the DTD/XSD was that <octave-ch...

Re: Consistency requirements in MusicXML

Michael, If everything else is the same in the two note elements in the two situations, the results should be the same. But there may well be some interaction that I am not remembering at the moment that occurs because you are breaking up an atomic representation into two separate elements. Practica...

Re: Consistency requirements in MusicXML

Myke, I want to take a moment and reconcile my comments in my last post with your thoughtful proposal of a separate mechanism to describe analytical relationships in a separate frame from visual/layout relationships. In my opinion this is the preferred way to go for concepts like "analytical vo...

Re: Consistency requirements in MusicXML

Michael, Voice tags are never required. Different notes in a chord can certainly have different voice numbers, if you are using the voice for analytical purposes vs. as a representation of the voice or layer concepts in notation programs like Sibelius and Finale. In Sibelius's case I think it would ...

Re: Semantics without engraving detail; letter widths and font substitution

Hi Joe, Thanks for the feedback! Regarding the two additional issues: These seem like excellent starting points. Additional issues that we - left/right margin settings that highlight formal divisions in the music, rather than simply establishing normal default margins - non-lyric text that is seman...

Re: Semantics without engraving detail; letter widths and fo

MusicXML is open source, so there is no way that I am the only person who can address future improvements to the format! Anyone can extend the format, build proof of concept software for how these extensions work, and bring it to the community for further discussion and refinement. While I apprecia...
