Re: A question of 'divisi'.

Hello again John, So Randy has also confirmed that there is nothing in Aria to help with this. I was just wondering; I've used divisi many many times and the resulting sound hasn't been too much of a consideration for me. I tend to agree with Randy that the actual difference in sound is probably no...

Re: A question of 'divisi'.

No, there really isn't anything in ARIA that would help with this. Suddenly having your strings doubled in size because of divisi is something I've seen people be concerned about, but I really think the difference in the sound is negligible, John - You've thought it through really, bringing volume ...

Re: A question of 'divisi'.

Thank you Michael, Yes, that's what I'm currently doing. But it strikes me that each time I use another iteration of violins 1 section used divisi, I double up upon the actual number of violins actually sounding, i.e. violins I becomes 32 violins instead of 16. now I suppose one can pull the volume ...

A question of 'divisi'.

The recent talk of string ensembles has prompted a question, 'how does one deal with 1st or 2nd strings playing divisi? Does one have two string sections, or put two notes into one section, which of course won't work for legato playing. i.e. 4 sections for 1st and 2nd strings both playing divisi. Wh...

Re: Creating Our Own Ensembles GPO4

Hello Michael, Small string sections are mostly what's called for in Bach cantatas and in soprano arias in the few Mozart operas that I sequence for the good lady. Two sets of three judiciously used and with the start and end note timings 'humanised' and sometimes a little bit of EQ tweaking gives a...

Re: Creating Our Own Ensembles GPO4

"Ensemble Building" is something in GPO's manual and its advertising. It's something that works well with woodwinds and brass, I just feel that the concept is more theoretically good than it is in practice when it comes to the strings. Part of the problem is that the string soloists are p...

Re: Help transposing horn parts please?

Hello again, A quick update. I decided to go back to a score I had created, again in order to make a rehearsal track, with which I had had some problems in understanding brass transpositions, and the way they were entered in older orchestral scores. I'd entered the notes in the position they appeare...

Re: Help transposing horn parts please?

Hello Michael and Jetcopy, Thank you both SO MUCH for your help. These two tables have been duly copied and printed and will be studied and implemented. Jetcopy, That looks like it might do the trick once having added all the settings to Finale. The only things missing are the Bb and Bb basso entrie...

Re: Help transposing horn parts please?

Hello Michael, First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer my post, much appreciated. Yes, I think I understand the principles of transposition. I used to play the oboe back when I was a lad, and sort of understood how the oboe d'amore and cor anglais/oboe da caccia worked. Is it a minor t...

Help transposing horn parts please?

Hi all, Hoping that a horn player (maybe Snorlax?) may be listening in and can cast some light upon the subject of transposition. Background: First of all I'm not a composer like many of the talented individuals who inhabit this and the NS forum (written in envy), I came to it too late in life, nor ...
