Re: Line breaks in text items

Replied a few days ago to say thanks - but it doesn't seem to have made it here. So thanks!

Line breaks in text items

In a music XML file, how does one store a hard line break in a text string - for example in a stave label?

(I have this feeling that the answer ought to be obvious - please forgive me if it is!)

Re: Library of Congress data challenge

A very interresting and important discussion. My point of view is that music-xml should be the native format of music-writing programs and players and readers. I.e. you should be able to open and save directly - no import and export (MuseScore is terrible). If some thing is missing in Music Xml, th...

Re: Library of Congress data challenge

In my opinion, MusicXML as it exists has at least four deep problems ... The unfixable problem is the collision between MusicXML's desire to represent music semantically and the desire to represent printed scores accurately. Probably the most serious of these is its mixing of two different methods ...

Re: Library of Congress data challenge

At the moment, as far as any well-defined publicly-available format for notation libraries goes, there is MusicXML (or the less well defined - and now severely necrotic - NIFF). And that's it. That’s not quite true. There are tons of other music notation formats out there. Lots??? There's MusicXL, ...

Re: Library of Congress data challenge

MusicXML does not, and is not intended to, completely and accurately represent music in either its visual or its auditory form. It also does not, and is not intended to, capture all of the information that is encoded in any of the proprietary score formats such as Finale and Sibelius. It also does ...

Re: display-step on percussion stave with <5 lines

Thanks Michael, I missed that. Dave David Webber Mozart Music Software http://www.mozart.co.uk / Hi Dave, Is this notated with a percussion clef? Percussion clef is treated like treble clef, so in that case your interpretation is correct. This is covered in the tutorial at < http://www.musicxml.com/...

display-step on percussion stave with <5 lines

Can I just check the specification of display-step on percussion staves of fewer that 5 lines? Is the bottom line of the staff treated as if it were the bottom line (E) of a 5 line treble staff? So the display-step on the line of a 1-line staff would be E4? Dave David Webber Mozart Music Software ht...

Re: 'extend' notes in lyrics.

Forgive me for getting back to you on <extend/> after nearly a year of other distractions. MusicXML 3's 'note.mod' tells me <!ATTLIST extend type %start-stop-continue; %print-style;> but I'm not 100% sure how the 'type' attribute should be used. For backward compatibility I guess <extend/> (with imp...

Re: Chord playback

The harmony element is intended for analysis rather than playback... Some applications may add their own interpretation to playback of chord symbols. This type of application-specific behavior is something we generally have omitted from the MusicXML format. I'm surprised by the intention in the fir...
